Bernstein On the Town: ‘Three Dance Episodes’ Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3 in C Minor, Op 37 Britten Les Illuminations Brahms Variations on a Theme of Haydn, Op 56a Marc Taddei – conductor Michael Houstoun – piano Benjamin Fifita Makisi – tenor On the Town, Leonard Bernstein’s smart and jazzy Broadway musical about three sailors on leave, took New York by storm in 1944. Beethoven also cut fresh ground in his Third Piano Concerto as he moved towards the turbulence of Romanticism and revelled in a new sense of power, purpose and emotion. Emotional intensity is the key to Britten’s compellingly evocative Les Illuminations, fascinating settings of Rimbaud’s sensuous poems, sung here by Benjamin Fifita Makisi. Finally, there are Brahms’ irresistible Variations on a Theme of Haydn, the endearing ‘Saint Anthony Chorale’. Free pre-concert talk one hour prior to the performance.
