Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms Bartok Bluebeard’s Castle
Marc Taddei ~ conductor Margaret Medlyn ~ soprano Paul Whelan ~ bass baritone Aidan Lang ~ director Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus ~ Michael Vinten music director
In association with The NBR New Zealand Opera
Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, inscribed “to the glory of God” and described as “poems of exultation but also of anger and judgement”, integrates echoes of the Baroque world and a flash of the Rite of Spring into these deeply moving texts and simple sound world. Passion rules in Bluebeard’s Castle, Bartok’s only opera, a spell-binding, blood-stained drama about a young wife in a mysterious castle and the power and limitations of love. The soaring soprano of Margaret Medlyn as Judith will be coupled with the magnificent bass baritone voice of Paul Whelan as Bluebeard. Aidan Lang, General Director of The NBR New Zealand Opera, will bring this thrilling semi-staged folk tale to life and to its inevitable tragic end. This concert is a true tour de force. Sung in Hungarian with English surtitles.
