Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) Boris Pigovat The Holocaust Requiem
Marc Taddei ~ conductor Donald Maurice ~ viola Jenny Wollerman ~ soprano Jarod Holt ~ baritone Orpheus Choir ~ Michael Fulcher music director
‘Kristallnacht’ or Night of Broken Glass refers to 9 November 1938 when organised anti-Jewish riots began in Germany and Austria. On 9 and 10 November 1938, hundreds of synagogues and shops were burned and thousands of Jews arrested and deported. Kristallnacht was a violent and signifi cant event of the Holocaust. 2008 will be the 70th anniversary and the day will be commemorated world-wide. Boris Pigovat was born in Odessa, USSR, and immigrated to Israel in 1990. The Holocaust Requiem was written in remembrance of his grandparents and aunt – victims of Babiy Yar, considered to be one of the largest single massacres in the history of the Holocaust.
The German Requiem, which Brahms described as a work for humanity, is one of the greatest of all choral works. It was written as a memorial to his mother but, unlike the traditional requiem which is a prayer for the dead, Brahms’ German Requiem seeks to comfort the living.
