Welcome to the Vector Wellington Orchestra's 2010 season! I am so excited to offer this wonderful music as we continue to do what we love most - playing for you!
Download the 2010 Season Brochure - Playing For You This season we celebrate 300 years of wonderful music. I may be biased but I think that music is our greatest cultural treasure and the orchestral tradition is the grandest part of this constantly evolving art: a vital, powerful, inspirational mirror of our changing world through the centuries. We've chosen to showcase great works connected with the years 1710, 1810, 1910 and 2010. That means we'll explore a truly fascinating terrain of music ranging from Rameau's Glorious Temple to the world premiere of John Psathas' new marimba concerto, Djinn. It's a century since Stravinsky dazzled the world with the Firebird, so it's timely to play that in our first concert as well as the gorgeous Adagio for Strings, by Samuel Barber, born in 1910. Linking with the Stravinsky, we also present two of his delightful neo-classical scores - Jeu de Cartes, and Danses Concertantes. I'm excited to work with some of our favourite soloists such as pianist Michael Houstoun, who gave us such a tremendous Beethoven cycle in 2009. Paganini and Michael Hill competition winner Feng Ning plays the great Elgar violin concerto, and Portuguese percussion virtuoso Pedro Carneiro makes a welcome return to Wellington playing another Psathas work. And I'm delighted to present one of New Zealand's rising stars, Donald Nicholson, performing Poulenc's witty Harpsichord Concerto. On the jazzier side of things, we are thrilled to perform with the great Diana Krall! And for families, our ever-popular Baby Pops series continues with "All Aboard!" - a must for every child who loves machines that move! Musical life in the Wellington region is unthinkable without the Vector Wellington Orchestra, which also plays for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the NBR New Zealand Opera, and the Orpheus Choir. We pride ourselves in playing for over 100,000 people each year and we would be delighted if you could join us in this celebration of music that will inspire, thrill and entertain! We are the Vector Wellington Orchestra - playing for you!
